First Day of Kindergarten

Hudson woke up so early, he was sooo excited. He got dressed right away. I had no say in what he wore on the first day of school. All I told him was that it had to be one of his new outfits. I think he did a pretty good job. He is only half day and it doesn't start until 12:45 so you can imagine how many times he asked me, "Is it time for school yet?" Oh boy this year is going to be fun if I get to hear that every morning. I showed him how to know when its time on the clock so that helps, but he is so anxious all morning.

On the first day of School, The Magic School Bus visited our house. (I had all intentions of decorating the bag and putting notes inside but I had a migraine the night before so putting them in the bag was all I could do.) The Magic School Bus brings a Big Lunch sack full of items he needed for his first day of school and leaves it on the front porch. Hudson got Alphabets Cereal, ABC Spaghettios, Goldfish, Fruit By the Foot (for the metric system), Pencils, glue, scissors, and a composition book. He was so excited to make words out of his cereal. He loved it.

First day of School picture in front of the house. I told him that he'd be hot in his levi's but he wanted to wear them because they were like dads. So cute!!!

Look at that terrified face. He was so excited and ready to go to school. But once he got there he became a little hesitant. He was so sad when we got to school that he wasn't sitting by anyone he knew but I told him he'd have plenty of time to play with his friends at recess. It made me sad to see him sad but I think he did fine.

That really sucks. I'm glad Hudson was still happy about everything though. I've been reading a book lately called Boys Adrift, it's about why a lot of boys have trouble being motivated these days. One of the chapters talks about how the school system has changed, and kindergarten today is more like what first grade was like 30 years ago. They expect everyone to sit still and learn to read and write, but a lot of boys aren't ready for that situation until they are 6 or 7.

It is important to learn to follow the rules, but really, he's a five year old on his first day of school. That teacher was really out of line being so rude to you. Did she really expect a bunch of five year olds to be perfect on their first day of school?!

That's too bad! Hopefully this teacher will realize how immature she is being soon! Well, I'm glad Hudson was still happy.

Boys Adrift huh? I'll have to get that one!

No worries April...in a few more days Hudson's chattiness will be the LAST thing she has time to worry about!

nightmare. Sorry you are so good to understand. Its hard not to be upset by nitpickiness or basicly being told your kid got on her nerves. Ugh.. He is such a conscientious and sweet boy she just misread the excitement. We had a little preview cuz Mindy told us about it....
That is the wrong foot to start out with a parent though and put you on the defensive right away. I am sure though that you will be able wipe away that misjudgement with your awesomeness and Huddy's awesomeness as the year progresses. P.S. we missed you!

My high school students struggle with remembering to sit still, listen, and follow rules on the first day of school and they are 16-18 years old. Sounds like this Kindergarten teacher needs a reality check.

I'm so sorry your first day was rough. That's definitely not the way you imagine it! I'm glad the second day was better!
And I LOVE the magic school bus idea! So creative!
